Join the study of Materiality as Resistance: Five Elements for Moral Action in the Real World, based on the 2020 book of the same name by the late Prof. Walter Brueggemann of Columbia Theological Seminary. Prof. Brueggemann was the William Marcellus McPheeters Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary and was an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ.
“Materiality”, as used in this class, is the use of material aspects of the Christian faith, as opposed to materialism, which places possessions and physical comfort over spiritual values. We will discuss how we as Redeemer members may reengage our materiality for the common good. How does materiality inform our faith when it comes to money, food, the body, time and place? How does it force us to act? Likewise, how is the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer (and the church writ large) obligated to use its time, money, abundance of food, the care and use of our bodies, observance of Sabbath, and stewardship of our world and those with whom we share it? No book purchase is required. Your class facilitator is Peter Quist. All are warmly welcomed!
