Even  to the Least of These

Pastor Brian Goke
November 20, 2008

thankful"The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they can not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God."

These are the word penned in 1863 by our Sixteenth President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.  Our nation was suffering through one of the darkest moments in our American history as The Civil War / The War Between the States divided families and friends alike.  Daily life was bleak; it was a time of great uncertainty.  By declaring the fourth Thursday of November as a national holiday whereby we look beyond ourselves to God and give thanks for the blessings in our lives, Lincoln continues to remind us in 2008 that our God is good and faithful even in the most difficult of times.

As we prepare our meals for the Thanksgiving celebration, God reminds us that all of these blessings have been given out of an abundant love from our Creator.  Jesus invites us to allow these abundant blessings to overflow from our lives to those around us who are in need.  In  Matthew 25, Jesus says, "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.  Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?  When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?  When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' He replied, "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

Next week, as you give thanks for all of God's blessings in your life, my prayer is that you would experience the joy of abundance overflowing through your life to those around you, even to the least of these.
