Now every year (Jesus’) parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. Luke 2:41-42
Once a year I have a physical. Every year, as that ritual approaches, I can’t help but think about my lifestyle. I reflect on how I eat, my exercise routine and the other habits that I almost unconsciously do. Then, I make some decisions that I hope will increase my health in every way.
For example, one of the habits I have had for years has been to enjoy a morning cup of coffee and do the New York Times crossword puzzle. But, somehow, in the transition from Minnesota to Atlanta, I have gotten into the habit of rising early and getting to church before the morning traffic becomes difficult… or, at least that’s what I tell myself.
I am no longer convinced that this is a good habit. I have come to believe that my rushing to leave – except for Tuesday’s Men’s Bible Study – is neither necessary nor healthful. And, frankly, I miss that crossword puzzle! So, I am going back to that habit… or at least try to replace the habit of rushing in the morning with a more relaxed start to my day.
I have always found that healthy habits are the best antidote to bad ones. That’s why this text leapt out at me. I wonder how many other spiritually healthy habits Mary and Joseph had that shaped the life of the family in which Jesus grew up? I am confident that, as committed as they were to the annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the high Holy Days, they had the habit of weekly worship, daily prayer and reading of God’s Word. As a consequence, I am convinced they related to others with their spiritual values in place, exercised service of compassion and hospitality in accordance with Old Testament teaching and diligently tithed. Healthy habits create healthy individuals, families and spiritually strong disciples.
What habits are healthy in your life? Which ones, upon review, ought to be replaced with such habits? I have always found it easier to change a bad habit by putting a good one in its place. How about you?
In our time, the need to be spiritually strong and morally clear is increasingly evident. I’m working on what that means for me. I invite you to a similar exploration and commitment to health.
Lord Jesus, grow healthy spiritual habits in me so that my mind and body will be renewed and strengthened. Amen
